Best Pickleball Balls of 2026: Outdoor, Indoor and What the Pros Play

by Pickleball Central Experts on Oct 19, 2026

Updated October 2026. We sell more pickleballs than any other product, by a wide margin, so we have an unusually good view of which balls players buy again. These eight are the ones that keep selling and keep their ratings. The first rule is simple: outdoor balls are hard with 40 or more small holes, indoor balls are softer with 26 larger holes, and using the wrong one is the most common reason a new player thinks a ball is bad. Prices below are for the smallest pack; all of these come in bigger boxes that cost less per ball.

Best outdoor overall: Franklin X-40

Franklin X-40 outdoor pickleballs, three pack

The X-40 is the best-selling product in Pickleball Central's history. More than 77,000 packs have shipped, 948 customers have reviewed it, and the average is 4.6 out of 5. It is a one-piece, rotationally molded ball with 40 precision-drilled holes of a single size, which is why it flies true in wind and bounces the same from the first game to the last. It is the official ball of the US Open Pickleball Championships and the ball most rec groups in the country reach for. It comes in yellow and several high-visibility colors.

  • Who it's for: every outdoor player. If you buy one ball, buy this one.
  • Specs: one-piece, 40 holes, outdoor. Packs of 3, 6, 12 and 100.
  • Price: from $12.99. Shop the X-40

What the pros play: Life Time LT Pro 48

Life Time LT Pro 48 pickleball

The LT Pro 48 is the official ball of the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball, so if you watch the pros, this is the ball you are watching. It is a two-piece, injection-molded ball with 48 evenly spaced holes, a high bounce and a bright green finish that is easy to track on broadcast and on a dim court. It plays faster than the X-40 and rewards aggressive players. Since we started carrying it in 2025 it has become our second-best-selling ball with more than 49,000 packs sold, and it works indoors as well as out.

  • Who it's for: competitive players, anyone preparing for a PPA or MLP-sanctioned event, and players who want one ball for indoor and outdoor.
  • Specs: two-piece injection molded, 48 holes, indoor and outdoor.
  • Price: from $12.99. Shop the LT Pro 48

Best indoor: ONIX Fuse Indoor

ONIX Fuse indoor pickleballs, yellow three pack

Indoor balls are softer and have fewer, larger holes, and the Fuse Indoor is the one players buy most, with more than 41,000 packs sold and a 4.5-star average over 399 reviews. It is the USA Pickleball-approved update to the ONIX Pure 2, with a slightly lower bounce that makes it legal for sanctioned indoor tournaments and a welded seam that resists the splitting that killed older indoor balls. It comes in yellow and orange, in packs of 3, 6 and 12.

  • Who it's for: gym and club play on wood or rubber floors.
  • Specs: two-piece, 26 holes, indoor, approved for sanctioned play.
  • Price: from $9.99. Shop the Fuse Indoor · All indoor balls

Best for tournaments: Dura Fast-40

Dura Fast-40 outdoor pickleballs, yellow six pack

Dura is short for durable, and the Fast-40 was the outdoor tournament ball for years before the newer balls arrived. It is a seamless, one-piece, rotationally molded ball with thick walls and hard plastic, which makes it the fastest and liveliest ball in this guide. It is also the most-reviewed product we sell, with 1,858 ratings averaging 4.5. The trade-off is that hard plastic cracks in cold weather, so keep it for warm days and keep the X-40 for the shoulder seasons.

  • Who it's for: players who like a fast, hard ball and anyone whose club still runs Dura events.
  • Specs: one-piece, 40 holes, outdoor. Six-pack and up.
  • Price: from $23.99 for six. Shop the Dura Fast-40

Most durable: Selkirk Pro S1

Selkirk Pro S1 pickleballs, four pack

Selkirk designed the Pro S1 around a patented 38-hole pattern, fewer and larger than the usual 40, and the result is a ball that cuts through wind and holds its shape under the power and spin of modern paddles. It is rotationally molded in one piece with no seam, so there is nothing to split, and in our reviews it averages 4.7 with players repeatedly noting how long a four-pack lasts. More than 12,000 packs have sold since it launched.

  • Who it's for: hard hitters, windy courts, and anyone tired of replacing cracked balls.
  • Specs: one-piece seamless, 38 holes, outdoor. Packs of 4, 12 and 100.
  • Price: from $9.99. Shop the Pro S1

Softest outdoor: ONIX Fuse G2 Outdoor

ONIX Fuse G2 outdoor pickleballs, yellow three pack

Not everyone wants the hardest ball. The Fuse G2 is a two-piece outdoor ball with a softer, more pleasant feel that still meets USA Pickleball hardness rules, so it is legal for tournament play. ONIX made the second generation three times as durable as the original with better seam welding, and its 4.8-star average across 408 reviews is the best of any outdoor ball we carry. Players with elbow trouble and players in cooler climates both tend to land here.

  • Who it's for: players who find the Dura and X-40 too harsh, and cooler-weather courts.
  • Specs: two-piece welded, 40 holes, outdoor.
  • Price: from $9.99. Shop the Fuse G2

Best budget indoor: GAMMA Photon Indoor

GAMMA Photon indoor pickleballs, three pack

The Photon is a two-piece welded indoor ball in an optic green that stands out against any gym floor, and it is the cheapest ball in this guide, frequently $4 for a three-pack on sale. It has a thicker wall than most indoor balls, which makes it easier to control and a little slower, and it bounces evenly on wood and rubber. More than 6,500 packs sold and an average of 4.5 stars over 84 reviews say it does the job.

  • Who it's for: rec centers, schools and anyone stocking a ball cart.
  • Specs: two-piece, 26 holes, indoor, 2.9 inches, 0.85 oz.
  • Price: from $7.99, often on sale. Shop the Photon Indoor

Best value outdoor: PICKLE-BALL TOP

PICKLE-BALL TOP outdoor pickleballs, yellow six pack

TOP stands for The Outdoor Pickleball, and it is our own brand's answer to the Dura: a seamless, rotationally molded hard-plastic ball with 40 holes in two sizes, sold by the six-pack. It plays close to the Dura at a lower price when it is on sale, which is most of the time, and 599 reviewers have given it 4.6 stars. If your group goes through a dozen balls a month, this is where the math works out. The TOP sampler pack is a cheap way to try it next to the others.

  • Who it's for: groups and clubs that buy by the box.
  • Specs: one-piece seamless, 40 holes, outdoor. Six-pack and up.
  • Price: from $23.99 for six, usually on sale. Shop the TOP · All outdoor balls

How to choose a pickleball

  • Outdoor or indoor. Outdoor balls are harder, heavier and have 40 or more small holes so wind does not move them. Indoor balls are softer with 26 larger holes and would blow around outside. Most people play outdoors most of the time.
  • One-piece or two-piece. One-piece balls (X-40, Dura, Pro S1, TOP) are seamless and fly truest. Two-piece balls (LT Pro 48, Fuse G2) are welded and tend to feel softer. Both are legal if they are on the USA Pickleball approved list.
  • Match the ball to your event. If you are playing a tournament, practice with the ball it uses. PPA and MLP events use the LT Pro 48; the US Open uses the X-40; many local clubs still use the Dura.
  • Watch the temperature. Hard outdoor balls crack below about 40 degrees. In cold weather use the Fuse G2 or an indoor ball and accept the softer bounce.
  • Buy the bigger box. Outdoor balls last a few weeks of regular play before they go soft or crack. The 12-pack and 100-pack prices are much lower per ball.

Our ball selection guide goes deeper on hole counts and construction, and the full ball collection has every approved ball we carry.

How long does a pickleball last?

Outdoor balls last a few weeks of regular play before they soften or crack; the Pro S1 and X-40 tend to last longest. Indoor balls last longer because the floor is gentler. Cold weather shortens the life of any hard ball.
