Meet The Pro: Susannah Barr

Susannah has been a mainstay in pickleball, both on the pro circuit and on local courts for years now. In 2019 she joined Selkirk Pickleball and has continued to influence the game while sharing her love for playing with her son Porter.

We caught up with Susannah to talk pickleball, paddles, and secret sauce. Check it out: 

What is your story? How did you get into Pickleball?

I started playing pickleball in 2017 with my 10-year-old son. I was just looking for something fun and active we could do together. We started playing at the local YMCA and was hooked ever since. I played my first tournament about a year later up in Hayden, Idaho!

What paddle do you play with and why?

I play with the Selkirk Invikta Power Air. I love this paddle because it is so fast. My hands are faster and I can hit the ball harder but still get a lot of control and spin. Plus, it's just a good-looking paddle!

What are some of your short term and long term goals in this sport?

In the short term, I want to continue to compete at the highest level and play my best pickleball. I'm always looking for ways to improve and add to my game.

Some long-term goals are definitely to help to grow the sport overseas. I played in the England Open this summer and had the best time meeting players from over 35 countries. Pickleball is a great way to connect with people from all different backgrounds and cultures.

What are your favorite drills to train?

I love drilling in general. Drilling, to me, is all about challenging yourself. My favorite drills include dinking, attacks, and counter-attacks. I also love drills that force you to see the court and find holes and weaknesses.

What do you think is your secret sauce out there on the court?

My secret sauce on the court is probably my ability to see the court as a puzzle that needs to be solved. I might not be the fastest or strongest player, but I can maneuver that ball in creative ways that put my opponents in trouble.

What do you like to do other than pickleball?

I love spending time with my son and my friends. We enjoy exploring new places, eating out, going for hikes, and generally just trying to be grateful for each and every day.
